A man accused of stealing from Perth restaurants by failing to pay his bill has been remanded to a psychiatric facility for a mental health assessment.

Brett Robert Barrey, 33, was arrested on Monday night at a restaurant in Northbridge after police were called over allegations he was refusing to pay for his meal.

A sawn-off shotgun, ammunition and a balaclava were allegedly found in a bag at his feet.

Barrey made a brief appearance in the Perth Magistrates Court to face charges including stealing from two restaurants, possessing a firearm and possessing stolen property.

He is accused of stealing from a restaurant in O’Connor on May 27, as well as the one on William Street in Northbridge.

Barrey was not required to plead to the charges.

Magistrate Tom Hall ordered he be sent to a secure unit at Graylands psychiatric hospital for assessment.

Barrey is due back in court next week.

Police said inquiries were continuing.
