ASHES THIRD TEST, Day 2 — Captain Steve Smith and Usman Khawaja have steered Australia out of trouble in the third Test at the WACA after bowling England out for 403.
Having made an encouraging start with the bat, Australia lost David Warner (22) and Cameron Bancroft (25) to Craig Overton in quick succession to slump.
Warner was caught behind, before England successfully overturned an lbw decision to remove Bancroft.
Midway through the final session on day two Australia are 2-149, with Khawaja (42) and Smith (57) at the crease.
Earlier, Nathan Lyon broke England’s record 237-run fifth-wicket partnership capturing the wicket of Dawid Malan.
Malan charged Lyon but was beaten in the air and got a thick outside edge where substitute fielder Peter Handscomb took an absolute screamer to remove the left-hander for 140.
Malan’s exit started an ugly collapse for the tourists where they lost 6-35.
