‘I couldn’t save them, I really tried’


A YOUNG FIFO mum has spoken out about her guilt after her ex-partner murdered the couple’s two young children.

Anatoria Takiwa says she will always wonder what more she could have done to stop Jason Headland killing five-year-old Zaraiyah Lily and three-year-old Andreas.

“I have no idea (how to go on),” she told 7 News.

“I don’t know what to do.”

Fighting back tears, the Yanchep mother says both her children had infectious smiles and sunny personalities.

In 2016, the couple had falling out and in the hours before he killed his children in October, Headland made a chilling phone call to Ms Takiwa where he told her he’d break her heart into 50 million pieces.

“I couldn’t save them … and I really tried,” she said.

Headland drugged the children with asphyxiation the official cause of death.

Ms Takiwa said she was “relieved” when Justice Lindy Jenkins jailed Headland for at least 31 years last week for the heinous murders.

Despite living with the guilt of not protecting her children, Ms Takiwa says she is determined to make her kids proud.

“I know they wouldn’t want me down and depressed, they never saw me like that,” she said.

“So they wouldn’t want me to be like that now.”
