SINGER Ricky Martin is about to take on a major acting role as Gianni Versace’s gay lover in Ryan Murphy’s new series.
The Hollywood Reporter says that Martin will star as Antonio D’Amico, Versace’s partner for 15 years until the designer’s death in 1997, in Versace: American Crime Story.
D’Amico has had a tense relationship with Versace’s family, including sister Donatella (who will be played by Penelope Cruz).
“My relationship with Antonio is exactly as it was when Gianni was alive. I respected him as the boyfriend of my brother, but I never liked him as a person. So the relationship stayed the same,” Donatella Versace said in 1999.
Martin started his acting career as Miguel Morez in soap opera General Hospital from 1994-1995. Other than a one episode guest spot on Glee, also directed by Ryan Murphy, and a starring turn in Evita on Broadway, he hasn’t done too much acting.
Cruz was a surprise casting choice to play Donatella Versace.
Rumours had circulated that Ryan Murphy-favourite, Lady Gaga, who won a Golden Globe for her work in Murphy’s American Horror Story: Hotel, would play the overly tanned designer.
Cruz will join Zero Dark Thirty star Edgar Ramirez, who has been cast as Gianni Versace.
Ramirez has made a name for himself in movies like The Bourne Ultimatum, Joy and the Point Break remake.
Versace was killed by serial killer Andrew Cunanan, who murdered at least five people in a three-month period in 1997, including Versace.
Cunanan, who was also gay, killed himself eight days after murdering Versace. A motive for the killing was never established.
Glee star Darren Criss has been cast as Cunanan.
