THE MP who revealed the moment she found her husband’s secret stash of child porn says some thought she should “stay silent”.

Rachel Carling-Jenkins made a shocking statement in the Victorian Upper House last week about her marriage breakdown as a result of disturbing material she found on her husband’s computer.

Dr Carling-Jenkins said not everyone thought she did the right thing when she reported her husband to police and left him after discovering his child pornography collection.

“There’s been a lot of people who have actually struggled with the fact that I stood up and went to the police so quickly,” the Australian Conservatives MP told the Nine Network’s A Current Affair program.

“I think they think I should have been silent, perhaps tried to get him help.

“But my role here, I felt, always, as soon as I saw those images, after I somewhat recovered, because to be honest I went into hysterics that day … all I could think of was those little girls and what can I do to help those little girls.”

The MP revealed her former husband Gary was in March convicted and jailed for possessing child exploitation images.

The response to her story has been overwhelming, she said.

A number of people have told the MP her story has helped them speak out.

“I’ve had a couple of people say ‘thank you, I’ve now got the strength to speak out because I’ve been holding a secret’,” Dr Carling Jenkins said.

The Australian Conservatives MP’s 18-year-old son, Terrence, was with her when she discovered the child porn on her husband’s laptop.

She had asked her son for help accessing his laptop after becoming suspicious of Jenkins’ secretive behaviour.

“I went looking on his computer maybe thinking I’d discover an affair, or maybe thinking I would discover pornography,” Dr Carling Jenkins said.

“I fell completely apart. I was crying, I was screaming. It was pretty awful for my son, and he became very angry.”

The MP did not talk to her husband before going to police and says she can’t understand the wives of convicted paedophiles who continue to stand by them.

“For me it kind of just clicked in my brain and I went ‘that’s it’,” she said.

“My marriage ended instantly as soon as I saw those pictures.”
