The Cronulla Sharks are facing their second drugs scandal in 72 hours after police charged rising star Jesse Savage with possession of an illicit substance.

Savage, 20, is a member of the club’s under-20s National Youth Competition squad and has been stood down from training and playing commitments until further notice.

The incident comes after Sharks chairman Damian Keogh stood aside from his position on Saturday, after being charged with possessing a prohibited drug.

In the latest incident, police said they were called to a licensed premises on Cronulla Street about 1:00am on Sunday and searched a 20-year-old.

They said they found two small bags containing 1.4g of white powder, believed to be cocaine.

It was seized and will be forensically examined.

The man was issued with a field attendance notice on a charge of possessing a prohibited drug and is due to front Sutherland Local Court on June 1.

“Our club has been made aware that Jesse Savage, a member of the under-20s NYC squad, has been issued a court appearance notice for alleged possession of an illegal substance,” the Sharks said in a statement.

The matter has been referred to the NRL Integrity Unit.
