POLICE are hunting a man who assaulted a young mum and her baby at a Halls Head apartment complex early Thursday morning.

Police say the little girl has a burn as well as cuts to her body and a large welt on her head.

She is being treated at Princess Margaret Hospital and is in a stable condition.

Officers were called out to an apartment complex on Apollo Road at about 4.50am, where the 20-year-old Falcon woman and her baby daughter were staying.

The mother suffered minor injuries to her face and hands during the assault and was also taken to hospital.

But the man had fled the scene before police arrived.

He is described as between 20 and 30 years old, slim build, possible black hair that is short on the sides and long on top, unshaven, wearing a chequered long-sleeve shirt, dark T-shirt, light-coloured jeans and black shoes with white soles.

Police have released a CCTV image of a person that may be able to assist in the investigation.

Anyone who recognises the person or may have information are asked to call Crime Stoppers.
