SHANNON Noll has stamped out online speculation around his role in a viral ‘shoey’ video.
Instagram user Sophie Talbot posted a clip of a shirtless Noll pouring beer into a sneaker, which a woman then drinks. Noll is heard christening it as a “shoey for Shanno”.
Noll’s promoter Rick Szabo said video was filmed after the Australian Idol star’s show at the Parkwood Tavern on the Gold Coast on Friday night.
“Shannon had his shirt off because he was soaking wet from the performance,” Szabo clarified.
“He was towelling off and going to get a clean shirt and there were a group of fans backstage — he loves meeting his fans, he always makes time for them.
“One girl had a specific request to get a picture of him pouring the beer in the boot for her local female touch football team. Shannon gratefully obliged. The video online is not the video from the girl who asked for the shoey, she hasn’t posted it at all. It was taken by some other fans who were there. They seem to be getting a bit of mileage from it, it is what it is, but everyone wants to put the boot into this kid at the moment.”
Some of Noll’s legion of online fans — who regularly make exaggerated claims about his ultra-Aussie lifestyle — are suggesting he was not entirely sober, despite the fact he had just performed a full concert.
Talbot even posted the video with the hashtag #cooked and wrote “Australia has no culture.”
“He hadn’t even had a beer,” Szabo snapped. “It’s an absolute joke. These assumptions people put online, with absolutely no evidence, are terrible.
“Straight after the show Shannon hopped in the van and went back to the hotel, that’s what he’s doing after shows now.”
Noll has curtailed his post-show decompression after an incident outside a strip club in Adelaide in January this year where he was king hit and then kicked on the ground; the singer saying those venues can be a place where musicians can drink without being hassled.
South Australian police later dropped all assault charges against Noll but Noll decided to ban after-show drinks on the tour.
One fan who was backstage at the Gold Coast concert took to Talbot’s post to defend the singer.
Muthaterrezza posted “Wow … I was there and he had the decency to spend time talking to all of us and to (fulfil) the requests made by all. I think it’s terrible you have uploaded this when clearly he wouldn’t want it. Anyway enjoy your five minutes of glory.”
Noll, whose new single is Southern Sky, plays shows in Cairns and Townsville this week.
He releases a new album later this year.
