Knights v Broncos

Newcastle will be left to rue what might have been once again after surrendering another lead for yet another loss at Hunter Stadium.

Coming off last week’s 20-18 loss to Canterbury, during which they led 18-8 with 15 minutes to go, the Knights held a 12-6 half-time advantage over the Broncos before the Queenslanders came back to win 34-22.

The two-tries-to-one half-time lead disappeared five minutes into the second stanza, when James Roberts gathered a Newcastle grubber and ran 80 metres to score.

With the scores level, Tautau Moga and Anthony Milford pushed the Broncos’ advantage, but the last-placed Knights admirably fought on.

Tries to Chanel Mata’utia and State of Origin star Dane Gagai put them within two points of the visitors, but Trent Hodkinson surprisingly sprayed his attempt to convert Gagai’s try.

Things got worse for the Hunter fans when former Knight Korbin Sims slammed the ball down with 10 minutes remaining, lifting his finger to his lips to tell the booing crowd to quiet down.

A late four-pointer to Broncos winger Jonus Pearson made the margin more demoralising than the Knights perhaps deserved.
