Three tries in 16 minutes have given the Cronulla Sharks a 18-14 win over the North Queensland Cowboys at Shark Park to kick off round 11 of the NRL season.
The Cowboys – without injured playmaker Johnathan Thurston – started the game strongly, and opened the scoring with a try to Antonio Winterstein in the 12th minute.
The Sharks had chances but failed to get the finishing touches, and the Cowboys made them pay with further tries to Ben Hampton and Kyle Feldt before half-time.
The visitors led 14-0 at the break, but they tired as time went on, and the Sharks – led by the powerful running of Andrew Fifita, came back into the game.
James Maloney cut through the Cowboys’ defence to score Cronulla’s first try after 50 minutes, then a brilliant offload from Fifita sent half Chad Townsend over in the corner in the 62nd minute.
Four minutes later the Sharks went down the left and Sosaia Feki dived over in the corner to give the home side the lead.
The win moves Cronulla to 16 points and puts the Sharks top of the ladder on points differential, but the Melbourne Storm can retake a two-point lead at the top if they beat South Sydney on Sunday.
