A police siege continues where a suspected gunman is holed up in a farmhouse west of Brisbane after Senior Constable Brett Forte was shot dead in Queensland’s Lockyer Valley.

Police said alleged gunman 40-year-old Rick Maddison was alone at a property in Gatton and officers had been negotiating with him since midnight.

Officers said he shot and killed Senior Constable Brett Forte from the Toowoomba Tactical Crime Squad when he was intercepted on a road at Seventeen Mile in the Lockyer Valley on Monday afternoon.

Maddison fled into bushland with an exclusion zone being declared over several square kilometres, they said.

Negotiators have talked to the gunman at different times throughout the night but he is refusing to come out.

Nearby streets remain in lockdown and residents have been told to stay indoors.

Police said they were hoping for a peaceful resolution.

A police command post has been set up in Gatton and paramedics are on standby.

Senior Constable Forte was working with Toowoomba’s Tactical Crime Squad at the time of his death. He had served with QPS for more than 15 years.
