Top picks of small screens tonight

WONDERING what to watch tonight? Anna Brain has done the hard yards trekking through TV guides for you. Here’s some of the evening’s top picks on free-to-air, Foxtel and streaming.

ABC / 8.30pm

Three stars

How is Susie Porter in every ABC drama? Not that I’m complaining, she does a top job. She’s senior surgeon Dr Maggie Cutter (geddit?) in Pulse, a new medical drama with healthy vital stats. Claire van der Boom (Sisters of War) is Frankie, a former transplant patient, now a junior renal doctor at a busy Western Sydney hospital, where heartbreaking decisions are made on a daily basis. And if you’re squeamish with guts and stuff, most of that action is via a screen in the surgery, which adds an extra layer of detachment — helpful.

The Family Law

SBS / 8.30pm

Four stars

“No longer will you be mocked for a life confined to Queensland’s regional backwaters. We’re officially national people.” That’s Ben’s teacher, telling the kids their production was such a hit, it is going on the road … to Adelaide and Toowoomba. Danny is working himself to death and Jenny is having “working girl” problems in the final ep of this great series.

Make You Laugh Out Loud: Builders

Seven / 7.30pm

Two stars

With more puns than you can poke a stick at, this is a compilation of clips starring the tools of all trades. Thick brickies and poxy plumbers are falling off ladders, digging themselves into holes (literally) and flooding homes. Yes, you are better than this. No, we won’t judge you for laughing.
