THE search is on for a young woman to play Dorothy in The Wizard of Oz which begins its Australian run at the Lyric Theatre, QPAC, in Brisbane on November 4.
And it could be you if you’re aged between 18 and 30, are no less than 160cm tall and can pass for a 16 year-old. Since you will spend quite a bit of time in the company of a canine called Toto, dog lovers are encouraged to apply to audition for the role.
Dorothy Gale is the role that made the great Judy Garland famous in the iconic 1939 film and Dorothy has gone on to be one of the most loved heroines on stage and screen.
The Wizard of Oz is the story of her travels along the Yellow Brick Road and through the mythical Land of Oz. This production is Andrew Lloyd Webber’s London Palladium show which has been a huge hit.
They already have a stellar cast lined up for this Australian show including Anthony Warlow as The Wizard and Professor Marvel, Lucy Durack as Glinda The Good Witch and Jemma Rix as The Wicked Witch of the West.
Producers John Frost and Suzanne Jones now need someone to wear the famous ruby slippers of Dorothy and an Australia-wide search is now underway. But since the show is coming here first it would be great if a Queenslander got the role.
John Frost says the Dorothy they find will join “a matchless leading cast”.
“Now I can’t wait to audition talented young actresses to wear Dorothy’s ruby red slippers and sing one of the most beloved songs of all time, Over the Rainbow,” Frost says.
“This beautiful, sumptuous production was a hit in London and audiences enjoyed visiting the classic story that’s universally loved. It’s wonderful that we will be rehearsing and opening the production in Queensland.”
